Centre for China Studies (University of Dhaka) is Inaugurated in Bangladesh

A specialized institute dedicated to advancing China-focused research and promoting scholarly exchange was inaugurated at the University of Dhaka on the afternoon of 24 March 2024. His Excellency Yao Wen, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, attended the ceremony as guests of honour. ASM Maksud Kamal, vice chancellor of the University of Dhaka, and Chen Dongxiao, president of the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, jointly unveiled the centre. 

 

At the ceremony, Professor Yu Yunquan donated a collection of books on behalf of the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies. Hu Jinming, Vice President of Yunnan University, Gu Hongliang, Vice President of East China Normal University, and Ma Linhai, Deputy Director of the Humanities Office at Tongji University, representing their respective institutions, signed a Letter of Intent 2024 with the Centre for China Studies. The Centre and its partners are expected to take the lead in promoting scholarly exchange and collaborative research between China and Bangladesh in the coming years.

 

More than four hundred guests, including academics, business executives, media figures from both countries, also attend the launching ceremony.  

 

The Shanghai Institutes for International Studies and the University of Dhaka have spearheaded in the past one year, multiparty effort to establish the centre in partnership with prestigious institutions such as the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies, Tongji University, East China Normal University, and Yunnan University in China, and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and Noakhali University of Science and Technology in Bangladesh.

 

The Centre is committed to conduct comprehensive and interdisciplinary research covering all aspects of China. Through collaborative endeavours, China and Bangladesh aim to elevate the centre into an inclusive, high-calibre platform for cultural exchange, and a regional hub of knowledge and expertise with global impact. Ultimately, this partnership seeks to foster closer cooperation in economic and social development, promote mutual trust, and strengthen people-to-people ties between the two nations.
