Chairman of the FES Mr. Martin Schulz Visits SIIS and Signs MoU

On February 3, 2024, Mr. Martin Schulz, Chairman of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, visited SIIS. Accompanying him were Dr. Sabine Fandrych, Director General of FES; Mr. Michael Meier, Head of International Division; Mr. Mirco Günther, Director, Department for Asia and the Pacific; Stefan Pantekoek, Policy Officer China, Department for Asia & Pacific, and others.

Prof. Yang Jiemian, Chairman of SIIS Academic Advisory Council, met with the delegation. The two sides reviewed the institutions' 40 years of exchanges and looked ahead, expressing the need for open dialogue to contribute to win-win cooperation between the two countries. Long Jing, Deputy Director ofCenter for European Studies of SIIS, attended the meeting.

After the meeting, Mr. Martin Schulzattended the Roundtable, and delivered a keynote speech entitled “The Turning Point in Geopolitics and the Role of Social Democracy: Heading Towards a Just, Secure and Sustainable Future for All”. SIIS President Prof. Chen Dongxiaodelivered the opening and closing remarks. SIIS Vice President Prof. Li Kaisheng moderated the Roundtable. Other SIIS speakers included Wu Chunsi, Director, Institute for International Strategic and Security Studies; Ye Yu, Deputy Director, Institute for World Economy Studies; Zhao Long, Deputy Director, Institute for Global Governance Studies; Zhang Yinghong, Director, Center for European Studies;NiuHaibin, Director, Institute for Foreign Policy Studies; and Zhang Qiyue, Assistant Director, Institute for Global Governance Studies.

Following the Roundtable, Prof. Chen Dongxiao and Mr. Martin Schultz signed a memorandum of cooperation on behalf of SIIS and FES.

Zhu Guijie, Deputy Secretary General, Chinese Association for International Understanding, and Benjamin Reichenbach, Director FES Shanghai, accompanied the delegation.Some of the SIIS scholars also attended the event.
