International Conference on “International Order and the United Nations in a New Geopolitical Era” Successfully Held at SIIS

On June 16, 2025, the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS), in collaboration with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Shanghai Representative Office, successfully hosted the international conference titled “International Order and the United Nations in a New Geopolitical Era” in Shanghai. The event brought together nearly 20 distinguished scholars and experts from China, the United States, Germany, India, Singapore, the Netherlands, South Korea, and other countries to explore the ongoing transformation of the international order and the challenges and prospects facing the United Nations in the current geopolitical context.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Prof. Li Kaisheng, Vice President of SIIS. Prof. Chen Dongxiao, President of SIIS, and Mr. Benjamin Reichenbach, Chief Representative of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Shanghai Office, delivered welcoming remarks.

The conference featured in-depth discussions around four central themes: Multilateralism and Spheres of Influence: Paradigm Shifts After the End of the Unipolar Era; Fierce Power Rivalries: China-U.S. Relations at a Crossroads; Balancing Major Powers: Strategic Dilemmas for the EU and Asian Countries; The Future of the United Nations at 80: What Role Can It Play in Safeguarding Peace and a Stable International Order?

The successful convening of this conference provided diverse perspectives for understanding the evolving international order in a new geopolitical era and contributed policy insight and intellectual support for building consensus, bridging differences, and jointly addressing global challenges.
