Multilateralism and China’s UN Diplomacy

2023/11/16

As the competition between multilateralism and unilateralism intensifies, safeguarding multilateralism has become urgent if we are to stabilize the post-war international order and improve global governance. Upholding multilateralism as an overarching principle of its foreign policy, China’s active position in this regard has won worldwide endorsement. As Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres said, “China has been a pillar of the multilateral system.” The UN is the foundation of the multilateral international order in the postwar era, and also a major platform for China to practice its commitment to multilateralism. An analysis of the crises facing multilateralism, as well as China’s position on multilateralism and its UN diplomacy will help us better understand China’s foreign policy on relevant issues, particularly global

governance.
