Designing the Future: the Roadmap of Northeast Asian Security Mechanisms

  August 2012 source:Renmin Publishing House
In recent years, the research on the Northeast Asian Security Mechanisms has become a hot word in the scholarly and policy circles. Based on his researches in the past five years on the North Korea nuclear issue, the six-party talks, and the Northeast Asian security situation, against the backdrop of a stalemate on the nuclear issue and a fading interest in related researches at home and abroad, the author goes beyond the traditional thinking on the real politics and the Korean Peninsula issues, puts forward a more sober, comprehensive, strategic, and forward-looking analysis. He argues for a grander regional initiative in Northeast Asia—the establishment of Northeast Asian Security Mechanisms—to address the North Korea nuclear crisis. The attention should be firstly focused on relating the denuclearization with the efforts in establishing peace mechanisms, then actions should be taken to design the architecture of Northeast Asian security mechanisms, and lastly, leave enough room for future developments. The author also argues that China should play a more proactive and constructive part in the process of establishing the security mechanisms and take on the role of “an equal yet guiding participant”.
