“Workshop on Sustainable Development in the Yangtze River Delta under the Pandemic - Green Recovery” Was Successfully Held in Shanghai

On September 6, 2022, the “Workshop on Sustainable Development in the Yangtze River Delta under the Pandemic - Green Recovery”, hosted by Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS), organized by Shanghai Magnolia Foundation for International Exchange (SHMF), and supported by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), was successfully held in a hybrid format.

Beate Trankmann, UNDP Resident Representative in China, and Chen Dongxiao, SIIS President, delivered welcome remarks. Bai Guoqiang, Deputy Director of Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment, and Yoonhee Kim, Lead Urban Specialist, Progra Leader, Sustainable Development for China, Mongolia and Korea, delivered keynote speeches. The opening ceremony was hosted by Yang Jian, SIIS Vice President.

The workshop invited over 30 speakers from UNIDO, UNEP, Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information, the CPC Committee of Tinglin Town, Jinshan District, WWF, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University, Fudan University, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Shanghai Petroleum and Natural Gas Exchange, Shanghai Environmental Energy Exchange, etc.

At the conference, SIIS released a bilingual report entitled “Innovation-led Resilience: Good Practices of China’s Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (Yangtze River Delta Region)”. The report, by presenting specific cases, discusses the region’s good practices in response to COVID-19 and in these five aspects: enhancing urban resilience and promoting sustainable development while fighting against COVID-19; dealing with aging society and enhancing the elderly’s well-being; narrowing urban-rural gap and striving for common prosperity; pursuing green development and tackling climate change; and boosting sci-tech innovation and breaking bottlenecks of sustainable development.

Fan Yufei, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of Shanghai Magnolia Foundation for International Exchange, Ma Chaode, Assistant Resident Representative of UNDP in China, and Yang Jiemian, Director of SIIS Academic Advisory Committee and President of Shanghai International Relations Society, delivered concluding remarks.
