Delegation of SIIS Visited Nepal, India, and Myanmar

From September 15th to 26th, 2019, a delegation led by SIIS president Chen Dongxiao visited Nepal, India, and Myanmar. Amb. Liu Youfa, director of South Asia and China Centre (SACC), Dr. Liu Zongyi, Secretary General of SACC, as well as Dr. Cao Jiahan, assistant director of the Institute for Comparative Politics and Public Policy participated in the group.

In Nepal, the delegation called on Senior Leader, Central Secretariat & Standing Committee Member Chief of Department of Foreign Affairs of NCP Madhav Kumar Nepal, and Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, and visited China Study Center and Center for South Asian Studies. SIIS scholars exchanged views with Nepalese officials and academics on governance, Nepal's foreign policy, bilateral relations, regional situation, Belt and Road Initiative, etc.

During the visit to India, the delegation visited Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, Observer Research Foundation New Delhi and Kolkata Offices, Vivekananda International Foundation, Institute of Chinese Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Centre for Land Warfare Studies. The scholars exchanged views with senior diplomats, retired generals, experts and academics regarding China-India relations, India's economic and social development, changes in the global and Asia-Pacific situation, and regional security architecture, and so forth. The delegation also met with Chinese Ambassador to India Sun Weidong and Consul General to Kolkata Zha Liyou, and discussed bilateral relations and think tank cooperation.

In Myanmar, the delegation called on the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs U Soe Han, and visited Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies and Myanmar Development Institute. SIIS scholars exchanged views with senior diplomats and researchers on Myanmar’s foreign policy, bilateral trade, BCIM, the planning of Myanmar's economic and social development, etc. The delegation discussed the cooperation between Shanghai and Yangon with Yangon Region Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry and Energy U Han Tun and Yangon Mayor U Maung Maung Soe. The delegation also visited the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar, and exchanged opinions on bilateral relations and regional situation with Ambassador Chen Hai.
